Canterbury’s roads came to a complete stop yesterday after several accidents caused major congestion in the city centre.
Every road was blocked from 3:30pm onwards with rush hour traffic only adding to the bad situation. Taxi driver Mick Landry said: “The roads were absolutely awful, completely horrendous.”
The gridlock started after three separate incidents caused road closures in the city.
A caravan and coach were involved in a small collision on St. Georges Roundabout, which caused a build – up of traffic while they dealt with the matter.
Around the same time a 16 – year – old boy was in an accident with a car in Pin Hill. The collision led the police to close the road from 3:25pm for an hour.
Old Dover Road also saw a collision yesterday afternoon, which involved two cars. The police had to shut this road down for several hours while the drivers were cut from their cars. One was severely injured and had to be airlifted to Kings College Hospital in London.
Over the course of the afternoon Kent Police and the Highways Agency tweeted updates to keep us informed of the situation. They were also keen to answer any questions people had about what was going on.
